Novice Championship Updates

Day 1
We had 9 entries in total however 2 of our boxers had no opponents in at their weight category (Sara & Callum).

Of our 7 boxers we had 2 representing the club today, with Kerr McLaughlin making his debut in the ring. Kerr was unfortunate to draw a much more experienced opponent however gave a great account of himself and showed encouraging signs for the future. Billy Melville gave a spirited display but unfortunately not enough to come away with a win.

Tomorrow sees Jay McGinty & Rhys McCoel represent the club, we will update you on their progress.

Jamie McMenamin, Josh McIntyre & Connor McGhee will all box next weekend in the semi finals.

Day 2
Both Jay McGinty & Rhys McCole represented Greenock Boxing Club at the Novice Championships.

The coaching team have came back with glowing reports for both boxers! Jay McGinty was involved in the standout bout of the weekend with the whole crowd on their feet. Jay drew a much more experienced opponent and took some heavy shots in the first round which led to a count, however came back to box brilliantly in the 2nd & 3rd round. Eventually the result of split decision was announced and we are glad to report that Jay came away with the victory!

Rhys also found himself in the ring with a much more experienced opponent and boxed beautifully according to his coaches. Unlucky not to get the decision on this occasion Rhys has given himself a solid platform to build upon and will take a lot from this experience.

A big well done to both boxers from everyone at the club.

Day 3&4 (Semi Finals & Final)

Full Story to come but an update on how our boxers performed on the final weekend.

Jay McGinty was first up on the Saturday and high in confidence with a great performance the weekend before. Jay walked away with silver in his first competition for Greenock Boxing Club and although he was disappointed, should be proud of a spirited display. Hopefully the first medal of many for Jay who no doubt learned a lot from the experience.

Next up was Josh McIntyre in his Semi Final winning with a unanimous decision. Immediately after Josh's Semi Final, fellow Greenock Boxer Connor McGhee was up, boxing at the same 48kg weight division. Connor came away with the win which made for an intriguing final with 2 Greenock Boxers going for gold in the same weight class.

Jamie McMenamin boxed his semi final to wrap up Greenocks boxing for the day. Jamie who started the round well boxing to instruction was dragged into a bit of a scrap and didnt get the result he wanted however will keep training hard in the gym and hopefully make up for it at next weeks show.

In todays final Josh & Connor boxed to decide who would take gold. On this occasion Josh came away with the victory, however Connor should be proud winning a silver medal in only his second fight. We have a few pictures below.

A big well done to all the boxers who represented Greenock Boxing Club!
